Chapel of the Little Portion

Chapel of the Little PortionChapel of the Little PortionInspired by a story of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Chapel of the Little Portion was designed by the noted sculptor, Stephen de Staebler and features a beautiful, polished steel cross facing the lake.

While Saint Francis looked at an icon of Christ in a dilapidated little church, he reportedly heard the voice of Christ speaking to him, saying “Francis, repair my house, which is falling into ruin.”

From there, Saint Francis went on to restore several ruined churches, including the little chapel Portiuncula, or “little portion” (of land), just outside Assisi, where the Franciscan movement began.

New Harmony’s “Little Portion,”  is located on the other side of the lake behind the New Harmony Inn and Resort.
