Backbeat Records and Just Looking Antiques

Backbeat Records and Just Looking Antiques are companion stores owned and operated by Don and Rebecca Boskey. Don Loves music, particularly vinyl records; Rebecca loves antiques, books and paintings. They both love New Harmony. Their record store and antique shop share a large, attractive space on the town’s historic Main Street.

Backbeat Records specializes in high quality used vinyl, and also carries used cd’s, cassettes, 8-Tracks, and a variety of other music-related items such as sheet music, posters, and old music magazines.

Rebecca has been collecting and selling antiques since 1983. Just Looking Antiques specializes in things she likes, including art and books as well as the popular high quality antiques. Rebecca also rents space to five other antique vendors to insure a consistent wide variety of interesting items for sale.

“We don’t concentrate on any particular type of music,” says Don, “but we have a lot of Rock and Jazz because that’s what most of our customers want. Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, and the Rolling Stones are always popular. But we have something of just about everything, including country, a little classical, contemporary composers, comedy, soundtracks, and a variety of different specialty records such as poetry, Exotica, and even car sounds. I am happy to keep an eye out for anything my customers are interested in.”

Records are priced based on condition and availability. Don, who spent many years as a vendor at record shows before opening Backbeat, is known for having records in great condition. He also carries a few that are more rare or hard to find, and thus more pricey.

“I don’t grade records,” says Don. “You are free to look at it and decide if you want to pay the price for the condition it’s in. It doesn’t bother me at all if you think it’s not worth that. But, in general, people seem to realize that I have good condition stuff and don’t mind my pricing. They keep coming back.”
