The Red Wagon is a Posey County institution, and interstate off-ramp favorite for many traveling along I-64. Its menu is as unique as its decor and both are the result of a long and ongoing relationship with the community.
The menu — which features made-from-scratch, home cooking and Cajun food — was built through collaboration with the community. So in addition to traditional midwest dishes such as roast beef and fried chicken, more exotic fare such as Fried Cornish Game Hen, Bayou Style Stew, and Homestyle Bayou Shrimp are also available.
The Red Wagon sports three dining rooms and a popular bar, all decorated with memorabilia and wildlife trophies donated, or on loan from, the community. The local high school painted a lot of the artwork on the walls, and other local artists contributed as well. So in addition to great food, it’s something of a Posey County museum.
“To this day, people want to put stuff on our walls and be a part of it,” says manager Brent Tharp. “A lot of what’s donated is part of the history of Poseyville and Posey County. “We the same faces almost every day. Local people support us, but we also get people from hundreds of miles away. For a lot of people traveling from Saint Louis to Louisville, we are their favorite stop along the interstate. ”
