The Wabash Lowlands is comprised of hardwood forests and several ponds. The area is an important wetland for migrating birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Wading birds such as cranes and herons inhabit the deep ponds and surrounding areas. Native pecan trees and naturally occurring bamboo and cane provide the cover for the wet floodplain forest. Harmonie State Park is a premiere mountain biking destination. Almost 20 miles of mountain bike trails wind through fantastic forested hills and deep ravines filled with towering old growth oaks, sycamore and birch. Features include dirt berms, log rides, and a “rock garden, and a black diamond slope with numerous jumps.
The Sycamore Loop, or Trail #1, takes a mostly flat route and is perfect for beginners or those who just want an easy ride. The Walnut Trail, Trail #2, goes up and down the hills and over the creeks and should only be ridden by intermediate and advanced mountain bikers. Continue reading
