The Old Dam

The Old Dam is a group of natural rock formations rising from the bed of the Wabash River near New Harmony.

When the Wabash is low in Summer, the rocks emerge forming a series of rapids, pools, and waterfalls, it becomes one of the best swimming holes east of the Mississippi. The rapids make for a great kayaking experience. Many people like to canoe or float down to the Old Dam from New Harmony in inter tubes on warm summer days. The Old Dam is one of the best fishing sites in the tri-state. People regularly catch catfish upwards of 25 pounds. Continue reading

Murphy Park

Murphy Park is a large public park featuring both old and new style playgrounds, a basketball court, fitness stations and abundant spaces for picnics or other outdoor activities, including a shelter house that can be rented for special occasions. Its playgrounds include Playtopia, which is designed for children of all ages and includes wooden walkways and castles, as well as a fenced area for two to four-year-olds with a playhouses representing New Harmony’s main street. Murphy Park Campground

New Harmony’s Murphy Park campground offers tent camping and RV sites with water and electricity available. Located in New Harmony’s largest public park, several playgrounds, a basketball court, fitness area, and a shelter house are just a few steps away; and it is not far from New Harmony’s many other attractions. Mountain Bike Trails

Harmonie State Park is a premiere mountain biking destination. Almost 20 miles of mountain bike trails wind through fantastic forested hills and deep ravines filled with towering old growth oaks, sycamore and birch. Features include dirt berms, log rides, and a “rock garden, and a black diamond slope with numerous jumps.

The Sycamore Loop, or Trail #1, takes a mostly flat route and is perfect for beginners or those who just want an easy ride. The Walnut Trail, Trail #2, goes up and down the hills and over the creeks and should only be ridden by intermediate and advanced mountain bikers. Continue reading
