Classic American 4th Of July Celebration
July 4, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
The Celebration begins at 10 AM in the Atheneum of New Harmony. Everyone is invited. Admission is free.
This classic American program always provides attendees with a patriotic rush and a sense of gratitude for the freedoms we share. Boy Scout Troop 386 will present the flags, a performance of patriotic songs from the Community Choir will be performed, the Declaration of Independence will be read aloud by Curt Schmitt, and Connie Weinzapfel, director of Historic New Harmony, a department within USI Outreach and Engagement, will share how she has been inspired by history.
Following the program, there will be a red, white & blue decorated golf cart parade from the Atheneum through town ending at Maclure Park, where the golf carts will be judged and prizes awarded.
At approximately 12 Noon in Maclure Park, festivities will continue with a community-wide picnic.
FOOD: The New Harmony Kiwanis will cook hot dogs and hamburgers that can be purchased for a nominal fee. Drinks will also be available for purchase.
MUSIC: Bob Minnette and the Dixieland Society will perform patriotic music from the bandstand.
During their early celebrations of the Fourth of July, members of the Harmonie Society would invite area residents into their community offering locally brewed beer to their guests. USI and Historic New Harmony will continue this tradition by providing free root beer.
