Marrs Elementary Principal, Greg DeWeese, shared the back story of the school’s longstanding burgoo tradition, celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2019. Even back in 1959, when their PTA started the annual event, a burgoo was an uncommon fundraiser for a public school. DeWeese said that with many schools raising funds through catalog sales, their more traditional fundraising event becomes more special every year.
Marrs’ burgoo is a community event in every way. Drawing hundreds of present and past graduates together, it’s a public event with the spirit of a big reunion. The burgoo crew uses a precise recipe every year, which calls for only fresh ingredients and a few secret spices. The recipe has been customized to make 500 gallons of burgoo in a built-to-purpose kettle. Consistency and family fun are the hallmarks of their burgoo.
At the Marrs event, burgoo and chili can be purchased bulk through a carry-out line. Marrs’ can provide go-buckets for $1, but guests are encouraged to bring their own. Chili, burgers, hot dogs and dessert are also available by the serving.
Marrs’ students help by contributing to their classroom’s themed raffle baskets and volunteer through the student council. Generations of graduates return to help cook, set up games and throw the party.
